In a bid to protect Australia’s unique environment, its authorities are very strict on what enters the country and there a severe penalties for breaking the rules. Items prohibited from being brought into the country are:
Illegal drugs.
Food products: Particularly meat, cheese, fruit, vegetables and flowers. There are also restrictions on taking fruit and vegetables between states.
Plant material and Animal products: These include many souvenirs such as animal hide or coral. Wooden objects will also be examined for insect damage.
Unsafe firearms.
On arrival you will need to present a filled-in Incoming Passenger Card and hand it to a Customs Officer. Be warned, all luggage is X-rayed and the failure to declare offending items on arrival you risk a A$220 on-the-spot-fine or much larger fines if prosecuted as well as up to ten years imprisonment!
You shouldn’t have a problem bringing duty free items into Australia as long as the authorities are convinced that they are for personal use.
Each person is permitted to carry 2.25 litres of alcohol, no more than 250 cigarettes and up to A$400 of dutiable goods.
