There are heaps of accommodation options available to you while you are travelling around Australia – camping, hostels, guesthouses etc. – therefore you won’t have trouble finding something to suit your budget. The most popular options for backpackers include:
Camping
Camping is a great budget option if you like to get back to nature. In fact, camping in the outback of Australia is the highlight of many a trip! Most towns will have at least one campsite or caravan park with decent facilities, although often they are situated a little way out from the centre of town. In some states, camping is even permitted in roadside rest areas. (This may be illegal in other states so check what the rules are when you enter a new State!). National Parks also have a designated camping area where you can stay.
If you sometimes find camping a little lonely, often you can find a backpacker hostel with an area to pitch a tent. This is a convenient way to get the social aspect and facilities of a hostel whilst saving a wee bit of cash too.
Backpacker Hostels
(Backpacker) Hostels are the place of choice for many because as soon as you walk through the door, you’re in with likeminded people from all over the world! They are usually good value for money and are an easy way to meet new travelling companions. Depending on the size of the hostel, you can stay in a dorm (3-12 beds) or a private room.
Like with most things, standards can vary from place to place, as can the atmosphere. Large purpose-built hostels with bars are a great place if you want a party atmosphere. For others, a smaller, more chilled, homely hostel might be the place for you. There are SO many hostels to choose from, you shouldn’t have trouble finding one that suits the mood you are in. Increasing competition has led to fairly high standards and lots of enticements too, such as free breakfasts, free internet etc.
Accommodation prices may change at different times of the year, depending on demand - it will cost you more in peak season! If you’re looking to save, find a hostel that is looking for staff. Some hostels hire backpackers to do cleaning and other odd jobs, offering free accommodation in return. There are a few hostel organisations (VIP, Nomads, YHA) which offer discount cards when you become a member. The membership card will give you discounted accommodation in all their hostels, along with other benefits. Check out:
Although there are hundreds of hostels all over Australia, there are also thousands of backpackers looking for a bed. If you don’t want to find yourself on the streets without a pillow, think ahead and book in advance during the peak times.
